While travelling we rarely think that each new stop – in a large city or a small village – can tell us fascinating story of the local key events that have taken place here. So today we want to tell you a bit of history connected with our last trip along the cultural route "The Huguenot and Waldensian Trail."
The story began uneasy – an exile, an arduous journey and a search for home. At the end of XVII century, more than 250 000 French people were declared heretics and left the motherland for a refuge. Huguenots they were called. The same fate stroke the Waldenses, which left Italy due to religious persecution and escaped to find a new place to live. But this story has a happy ending, because afterwards the Huguenots and the Waldenses found their home in the land of Switzerland and Germany.
It has been over 300 years, and the story is still of a great importance for the whole Europe, because it talks about the helpful hand, respect and tolerance. That is why there is а route dedicated to the story that passes through the territory of France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland. We, along with Visit Europe, as well as the European Institute of Cultural Routes have explored it this summer!
Walking the pathways of the story, we called in small but crucial towns and villages, visiting the most significant historical monuments and just enjoying the stunning nature of the area. Many places on our path were difficult to find on а map. Planning your trip, most likely you will not even pay attention to them. But this fact makes them so unique. Being there you do not feel that "touristic" treatment, so typical of big cities. Here you will not see that grandiose chain hotels. Instead, you can stay in a cozy guesthouse. Do not expect a lot of luxury restaurants, instead of them you will come across a couple of cafes with local, almost home-style cooking. When you walk around the city or village, the locals will not try to sell you a souvenir, instead they will tell you about themselves and their city. Events of the past and people of the present made this place unique and worth visiting for sure. And to make such a journey easier, we will soon publish a series of guides through the main points of this cultural route. So, to be continued and here is some preview!
